This is a blog written in a personal capacity on local issues and does not reflect the official position of Stansted Mountfitchet Parish Council.
I became a parish councillor for Stansted South in May 2019 and am a life-long resident of Uttlesford. Joining the parish council seemed to be a logical step as I had been appointed the village’s voluntary tree warden and was a member of the parish’s library working group. I drafted the parish’s response to Essex County Council’s consultation on its library strategy which proposed the closure of our library. Following community protests, petitions and a united effort by the parish council, the council backed off from closure and we now have an even better facility in the new Mountfitchet Exchange.
I previously helped the campaign against Essex County Council’s proposed closure of my son’s primary school in Farnham in 2014, writing its 10,000-word consultation response. The campaign was successful and with the efforts of parents, staff and the community, the school has doubled in size and earned an Ofsted “good” rating.
I strongly believe in defending and advancing local public services. Stansted is often a “poor man” of the district and has seen services either run down or closed, while larger and wealthier settlements such as Saffron Walden suck in the lion’s share of funding. With the highest deprivation rates in the district, I am fighting for Stansted’s fair share to secure a better quality of life, ensure an inclusive and socially diverse community and resist the gentrification that has seen other towns turn into exclusive settlements.
I am a keen woodland conservationist and am secretary of the trust that manages Birchanger Wood. My interests also include martial arts and I am 1st dan in Taekwondo, 1st kyu in Iaido and am also training in Shotokan Karate.
I am a member of Chelsea FC, a member of Leyton Orient Fans Trust and am passionate about community sports, being a keen follower of Stansted FC and attending their games – and occasionally attending Woodford FC matches.
